Woodley Concert Band
WCB Spring Concert, March 2023

Off on our Hols

Thursday, 23rd July 2015

Last weekend, WCB packed our bags and headed off to spend the weekend on tour in the cathedral city of Worcester and the spa town of Malvern. During our stay we had two outdoor concerts lined up in Gheluvelt Park, which was built in honour of those lost in the First World War in Worcester, and Priory Park, situated close to the town centre of Malvern, famed for its splendid views of the Malvern Hills. The two concerts were very different in feel and atmosphere. The first bandstand, situated in the middle of a lake, could only be accessed via a bridge from dry land, with the audience enjoying the music floating over the water to them. Malvern was a more traditional summer park venue with the listeners surrounding the band in the beautiful sun – we counted over 200 people in the audience and it was  very exciting to have great support for a visiting band!

We had chosen a lovely mixture of repertoire for our audience from marches (Luftwaffe and Battle of Britain) to medleys from musicals (Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof) to more popular classics (You Can’t Stop the Beat and Pharrell Williams’ popular Happy) and even squeezing in some film themes too (Frozen and The Magnificent Seven). For Strictly Come Dancing fans, we showcased three Latin American pieces featuring the Cha Cha Cha, Samba and Bossa Nova – we’re sure it would have been a “Ten from Len” for our performances! The sun shone throughout the weekend and after a number of years of dubious meteorological conditions on our tours, we couldn’t have hoped for better this time!

After a fantastic weekend away, WCB have got a couple more performances out and about over the coming weeks (details here) and we’re also starting to look forward to our brilliant ‘Best of British’ concert at Waingels College in October (more info here).

In the meantime, you can find some photos from our trip in our gallery and we look forward to seeing you at a concert soon!
